no doubt that people have heard of Carbon Offsets, it's buying/paying for a green project to help negate the effects of the carbon you put out. For more info, click on this link
It doesn't require a lot of money, contrary to what one might think, to offset our carbon emmissions.

I just started purchasing carbon offsets to offset my g/f's long commutes to work each day. The problem right now is that it is largely an unregulated industry (see sfgate.com's article on offsets from this past saturday), which means it's hard to tell which offset companies are actually true to their word. Hopefully with the end of the Bush empire, we'll have a government willing to tackle more green issues and help to regulate this fledgling and potentially huge industry.
